32 Adhyētā Site Revamp
This past week, I have been working on eliminating the Python server from the Adhyētā app backend. So, the reader app promised on the homepage since November 2024 will finally be available to readers starting next week.
The original idea was to let readers register and thereby link the vocabulary features to a particular account rather than a particular device. This would let them move between devices without losing progress. But account setup comes with its own complexity:
- A backend server
- Collecting and storing PII such as email addresses to support data linking as well as account recovery
- An email service like the one used by this devlog
A few things have caused me to revisit the idea:
- The complexity of supporting both the static and dynamic variants. This has resulted in the vocabulary features not being shipped and prevented me from adding new stories to the site.
- The need to run a second service alongside Caddy, which handles static serving.
- The need to add a third service to handle email.
- Most people primarily use their phones, making multidevice support an edge case. A future data import/export feature can solve the even rarer case of a beginner wanting to transfer their data to a new device.
The change lets me ship the feature, and unblocks the story pipeline. This is the right move.
